Background
The Digilent Design Contest is an international contest open to all students studying in a technical school, college, university, or other educational institution. The contest provides an opportunity for students to present their work and receive feedback from international industry representatives. Creativity, feasibility, and originality are encouraged throughout project development and presentation.
For approved projects, contestants are provided with the Digilent hardware needed to implement the project. Contestants who present a project that meets the guidelines of the contest may keep the Digilent hardware used. The best projects are awarded prizes and are honored on Digilent’s website.
The European Digilent Contest, organized in Romania by Digilent Inc., Digilent RO and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, started in 2006. The seventh edition, held in May 2011, included 59 student teams form 12 universities from Romania and Europe.
Similar regional Digilent Design Contest competitions are held in the U.S. (in collaboration with Rose Hullman Institute of Technology), India (at Sir Padampat Singhania University, Udaipur, Rajasthan) and China (with Tsing Hua University, Beijing).
Some top past projects include Blue Rover, a remotely operated rover with applications in rescue and reconnaissance missions and Fractal Music Composer, a drum kit simulator using accelerometers attached to the user's hands and feet which are connected wirelessly. The Design Contest is a venue for young people to develop their professional skills.
