Trenz Electronic GmbH, a German provider of development services in the electronics industry since 1992, now distributes also X Engineering Software Systems (XESS) Corporation products.
XESS is a company based in USA founded in 1990. XESS Corp. promotes the use of programmable logic technologies by offering reasonably-priced development environments, tools and tutorials to engineers, researchers, instructors and students.
Among other XESS items, XuLA is particularly interesting for the developer's community: a low-cost, open source design (firmware, bit-streams, schematic, PCB layout, documentation) break-out module featuring a Xilinx XC3S200A Spartan 3A FPGA, 8 MByte SDRAM, 2 Mbit Flash, 3.3 and 1.2V regulators, 12 MHz oscillator and 40-pin interface. Alongside the FPGA is a Microchip PIC 18F14K50 microcontroller, a USB 2.0 port and an auxiliary JTAG port. All this on a 51 x 25 mm footprint and for less than 50 EUR. The board works with the XSTOOLs software, Xilinx ISE WebPACK, iMPACT and ChipScope (requires Xilinx JTAG cable).
